Philip Makanna: "Ghosts" |

|
In a departure from our other shows which have featured black and white fine art photography, we're proud to feature the incredible Warbird Photography of Philip Makanna. He has developed the portraiture of World War II aircraft to a fine art. LightBox produces the archival black and white prints for Makanna's exhibits that accompany his color work. The historic, sometimes haunting imagery of the pilots and crew that flew these magnificent machines ties together the relationship of man and machine. The cold, yet very glorious historic imagery in black and white sets the stage for Philip's images rich with color, and full of life, wielding the immense strength that helped forge the freedom we enjoy today. The influence of having Dutch parents who survived the second World War, and my father-in-law who is a legend in commercial aviation and his daughter, my wife, have inspired my love for WWII airplanes. In fact, I hope to someday pose for Philip's camera with our two T6's. My pursuits in business as well as my personal passions have put me in contact with lots of people that share these interests. It is very exciting to intertwine the pleasures in life with your life's work, and in doing so I have found not only a new customer, but a good friend. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do every day. —Bruce Starrenburg Philip Makanna has been photographing restored World War II airplanes around the world since he first saw a Confederate Airforce Show in 1974. A resident of San Francisco, he is the author of three highly successful books, GHOSTS: A Time Remembered, GHOSTS: Vintage Aircraft of World War II and GHOSTS of the Skies: Aviation in the Second World War. Mr. Makanna is also the creator of the world's most popular aviation wall calendar. These books, calendars, and warbird related items as well as many more images are available on the Ghosts website. We've also included an interview with Philip by Camera Arts Magazine to accompany our gallery show. E-mail:
