Black & White Processing

LightBox Inc. offers top quality film processing by means of a Jobo rotary-tube processor which is unsurpassed in processing consistency and evenness. Sheet film is processed in Expert drums which ensure absolute edge to edge density. This benefit will be realized by full frame printability and contact printing where edge density fall-off will be noticed. Xtol is our developer of choice for most applications; however, we have a variety of developers we can work with. For significant volumes of processing or extended projects we will gladly consult with you about special developers. Our film is fixed in two successive hardening fixing baths which solves the problem of a magenta cast to the film base, a problem common with T-max and other thick based emulsions.

Black & White Printing

LightBox Inc. offers a full range of black & white services—RC, fiber, Giclee, and platinum/palladium—all custom work. For our commercial printing we have chosen Ilford 500H heads and for fiber-based printing we use Zone VI cold light heads. We also offer a variety of print toning options as well as presentation services. Our Giclee prints are made on Epson 9600 Pro Graphics Printers.

Edition Printing

These custom prints are hand processed, fixed and selenium-toned to archival standards based on ANSI requirements*. Specialized toning is available at additional cost. Prints include precise cropping, dodging and burning.

A word about mounting materials. Lightbox's fiber based prints have been hand processed and fixed to archival standards. Much effort has been made to ensure that these prints will remain for many years to come; however, to ensure the longevity of these hand-crafted prints, they must be mounted on conservation-quality board. Conservation-quality is defined as: 100% rag, acid and lignin-free, which may or may not be buffered with calcium carbonate. Don't be fooled by what some frame shop chains call "archival" which in their context is merely acid-free. The board must be classified as a "museum" or "conservation" material by the manufacturer to meet these criteria. If there is any question about these issues, please inquire about our in-house conservation mounting services.

Fine Art Services

LightBox Inc. offers a full range of fine art services including unsharp masking, toning, and platinum/palladium printing. We offer an attractive alternative to either the high-priced services of many fine-art printers or the low quality of many labs. Being artists ourselves we have some understanding of this issue and believe you'll find Lightbox to be an extension of your own creativity.

Platinum/Palladium Printing

Our platinum/palladium prints are made with a hand-coated combination of platinum and palladium (for warmth). They are printed on archival paper made by Arches, makers of fine artists' papers. The surface is slightly textured, neutral in color. This paper is 100% cotton and is archival. Non-buffered mat boards should be used with platinum materials.

When printing a portfolio series we can negotiate a pricing structure based on the scope of the entire project. Ordering additional prints at the time one is ordered is encouraged in the interest of cost-efficiency as well as consistency in the set of prints. Print matching on previously made prints is possible, but we must have the original print for reference.

Black & White UltraChrome

Black & white Ultrachrome Giclee Prints are produced on an Epson 9600 Pro Graphics Printer on 100% Rag Archival Substrates.  Our careful selection of materials lends to the look and feel of a true work of fine art. Our editing work is done within a wide gamut color space in 16-bit mode thus preserving the most subtle tones with no digital artifacts.  Via our in-house software we apply virtual toning to your prints allowing several warm, cool and sepia looks as well as neutral black & white.
